Koontz swims to more records

Staff Reports

Shelby Koontz is riding a hot streak for the Douglas Dolfins swim team right now.

Koontz turned in another record-setting performance, this time at the Dolfins-hosted High Country League Short-Course Championships held last weekend. She logged gold medal finishes in four events — three of which resulted in meet and team 15-16 age group records — during a meet that drew 430 swimmers Friday through Sunday to the Carson Valley Swim Center.

This was coming off a strong showing one week before at the USA Swimming Western Zone Championships in Clovis, Calif., where Koontz set a meet record in the 100 butterfly in addition to three team age group records. This time, she came back to altitude and set records in three distance races, including the 400-yard individual medley, 500 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle.

Koontz won the girls 15-18 age group 400 IM in 4:31.98, the 500 freestyle in 5:12.80 and went 18:03.40 in the mile, setting meet and team records in each of those races. She also captured first-place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.53. She also combined with Savannah Chappell, Emma Gray and Jordan Knowles to place second in the 400 freestyle relay

Reno Aquatics scored 4,156.50 points to edge Lakeride by 51 points for the team championship. The Dolfins took third-place as a team with 3,333 points.
