Kids turn out for 23rd fishing derby

Staff Reports

The 23rd annual Kids Fishing Derby was a reeling success, according to 2012 derby president Steve Hamilton.

About 1,500 kids showed up Saturday and Sunday, he said, and the majority caught their limit of two fish.

“If not the best derby I’ve done in 10 years, it certainly was number two on the list,” Hamilton said. “If anything, because of the heat, the bite was a little slow. And because of the clear water, the fish were very skittish. The kids missed a lot of bites, and it would have been nicer with muddier water, but I believe the kids had a great time.”

The preceding Thursday, trucks from Smith Valley and Mason Valley planted the Willow Creek pond at Lampe Park with nearly 5,000 fish.

O’Banion’s Fish Hatchery in Smith Valley brought 600 trophy fish, weighing up to five pounds, and the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery brought 4,000 fish in the 9-12-inch range.

“There was a lot of interest in the casting contest,” Hamilton said. “They were not named winners, but every kid who went out there to practice casting got a prize.”

Fire trucks from East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts showed up Sunday, fresh off a wildfire in the Pine Nut Mountains, to interact with the kids, Hamilton said.

“They sprayed them down with the hose, and they loved it,” he said. “Sparky the Clown came for the first time, and they loved that, too.”
