Girls Soccer: Kynett’s hat trick boosts Tigers to win

The Douglas High School girls soccer team got up early, fell back through the middle and picked up a pair of late goals to sneak away with a 3-2 win at home against Galena Tuesday afternoon.

“We had two rookie mistakes after we scored first, but we got the comeback win,” coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. “I was very proud of the patience and perseverance after mental setbacks.”

The Tigers improved to 12-3 overall and 9-2 in Northern Division I play with the win.

Douglas freshman McKenna Kynett scored all three of the Tigers’ goals, extending her team-leading season total to 17.

Kynett put the first goal in just inside the 10th minute of the game, but Galena was able to answer in the 20th minute on a rolling shot from 25 yards out.

The Grizzlies went up 2-1 in the 31st minute, and appeared to go up 3-1 just a minute later on a headed shot off a rebound. The goal was waived off, though, due to an apparent offsides, leaving Douglas down 2-1.

The score stayed locked there well into the second half before Samantha Crawford placed a long ball down the slot to Kynett, who one-touched the pass, made a neat turn on the ball and bounced the shot into the net for the tying score in the 74th minute.

Two minutes later, it was Kynett again, this time on a breakaway, who scored on a looping shot from 15 yards out for the game-winner.
