Douglas sophomores set for regional golf

Staff Reports

An improved Douglas High boys golf team ended its regular season on an upbeat note Monday with a season-best score of 551 during Sierra League play in Dayton.

Coach Evan Evans is hoping to see that peak continue when sophomores Jack Smith and Tobin Mayotte play at the Northern 4A Region Tournament Monday and Tuesday on the same Dayton Valley Country Club. Smith and Mayotte finished 22nd and 23rd individually on Monday.

This is the first region tournament appearance for both players.

"I am excited for both of them," Evans noted. "They have been battling each other all year and it has helped both of them improve and stay focused. As soon as they finish on the 18th hole, they ask me what the other one scored. It has been a healthy competition all year."

Monday marked a good finish to the regular season, he added.

"We finally had a great day of weather," he observed. "It was nice to see the kids play well on a difficult course. They have been steadily improving and finished the season on a strong note."
