Douglas High to host alumni basketball games
November 14, 2012
Both Douglas boys basketball coach Corey Thacker and Douglas girls basketball coach Werner Christen talk frequently about their seniors building a foundation for the future of the program.
This year, the Tiger basketball program is reaching out to give its former players a close-up look at what their work helped establish.
Douglas High will host an alumni basketball scrimmage Nov. 24 at the high school with a girls game at 2:30 p.m. and a boys game at 4 p.m.
“We always say our alumni have helped build the program into what it is,” Thacker said. “This gives them a chance to see where we are now. We started talking about it last year, just trying to establish something where we can have people proud of the program for some of the recent success we’ve had. We wanted to have them be able to come back and celebrate the program. We’re hoping this develops into a tradition every year.”
The scrimmages will run on 25 minute halves. On one side will be the current varsity squad. On the other will be the alumni.
“We’ll announce all the alumni just like when they played here,” Thacker said. “We’re thinking of rotating new sets of players in about every five minutes and hopefully have some fun games.”

Anyone interested in playing can register via the Douglas basketball program’s Web site at cvbahoops.net/DHS_Basketball_Alumni_Game.html. Cost to play in the game is $20 per player, which includes an alumni T-shirt and 10 raffle tickets for either a chance to take a half-court shot with a $100 prize or to win one of six gift baskets.
Admission to watch the game is $5.
“We’ve had a lot of response already, especially from the more recent alumni,” Thacker said. “But we would like to get as many people as possible out there, hopefully get alumni from a lot of different eras. We want everyone who has played basketball at Douglas High in the past to feel like they can be a part of it.”
