Basketball: Douglas boys close out tournament with win

The Douglas boys basketball team closed out the San Diego Holiday classic with a 54-49 win over Paraclete (Lancaster, Calif.) Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers went 2-2 at the classic and got scoring from nine players in the final game. They conclude their non-conference schedule with a 7-6 record overall and will host Reed Jan. 5 as league play picks back up.

Hunter Myers, as he did in every game at the tournament, led Douglas in scoring Saturday, turning in 22 points with 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Michael Nolting had 12 points for the Tigers, Jaden Wass had six, James Herrick and Pat Johnson each had three and Jaden Mustacchio, Austin Evans, Tay Simms and Joe Syammach each had two points.

On Friday, Douglas controlled the majority of the game against Bakersfield, Calif., but in the end, a fourth-quarter collapse was too much to overcome as Bakersfield claimed a 59-49 win.

Bakersfield outscored Douglas 24-5 in the fourth quarter to pull away with the comeback win. The Tigers had led 28-25 at the half and 44-34 after three quarters.

Hunter Myers led the Tigers with 14 points in the game. Pat Johnson had 12 points, Austin Evans and Michael Nolting each had eight and James Herrick added seven.

The Tigers hit seven 3-pointers in the game.

The Douglas girls basketball team to Hazard 43-31 Friday morning at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic, dropping to 7-7 overall on the year.

Desiree Cage scored 15 points and Diana Regalado scored nine points in the loss. Leonna Mortimer added another five points for Douglas. Douglas lost to West Torrance 50-25 Friday night.

The Lady Tigers closed out the tournament on Saturday with a 49-44 loss to Coronado. Cage again led the Tigers, this time with nine points. Mortimer and Corynne Millett each scored eight and Maddy Lowe and Diana Regalado each had six.
