Cross country runners shine at league meet

Collectively, the Douglas High boys and girls cross country teams enjoyed their best performance of the season Thursday during the Sierra League championship meet in Reno.

Douglas won the league girls team title and the boys ran to second-place as a team during competition held at Rancho San Rafael Park. The meet served as a preliminary for the Division I Northern Region Championships on Saturday at Rancho San Rafael Park. The top three teams in both the girls and boys races will qualify for a return trip to Reno one week later for the NIAA State Championships.

On Thursday, Lindsey Adams won the girls race in a time of 19:10 for 5 kilometers that was the fastest of the day overall, including the High Desert League entries, and Douglas captured the team title by a 33-56 margin over Galena. Carson was third with 70 points.

Moriah Munyan ran 20:11 to place second in the race while Madison Cote ran 21:36 to place ninth, Lizzy Byrne 21:37 for 10th, Rebecca Corbett 21:40 for 11th and Maria Munoz 21:42 for 12th.

On the boys side, three-time defending region champion Galena won the team title by a 28-45 over second-place Douglas. This was the closest the Tigers have been all season to the Grizzlies. Carson was a distant third with 80 points.

By comparative times between the Sierra and High Desert leagues, Douglas would have joined Galena and McQueen as top-three teams in the Northern Region.

Galena swept the top three places in the race, while Austin Croxall ran 18:06 and freshman John Munyan 18:07 to place fourth and fifth respectively. Lane Smith ran 18:27 to place ninth, Brandon Pankey ran 18:28 to place 11th while Cole Peck and Kaleb Morris came in together at 18:45 to finish 16th and 17th respectively. A total of 39 seconds separated the team’s five scoring runners and 51 seconds separated the top seven.
