Terada second at state golf tourney

Douglas High School’s Koko Terada narrowly missed in her bid for gold on Thursday when she lost to Katrina Prendergast of Spanish Springs in a playoff at the NIAA Division I State Girls Golf Championship in Las Vegas.

Prendergast sank a 6-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the title at the Bear’s Best Golf Club. Prendergast, a 4.0 student and academic all-state recipient, made up three shots on the final three holes to force the playoff.

Terada shot 4-over par 76 on Thursday to finish the 36-hole regulation at 148. She made the turn on Thursday at 40 and then charged through the back nine holes with an even par 36. She was 2-under before she bogeyed No. 16 and then bogeyed the challenging 413-yard, par-4 18th hole.

Mercedes Khumnark of Green Valley finished one shot behind at 149. The top three players are all juniors.

Terada, who finished third at last year’s state final, started strong on Wednesday when she shot even-par 72 for the opening round. The Tiger made her turn at 37 and then shot 1-under 35 over the back 9 to complete a solid round over the 5,532-yard layout.

Spanish Springs finished the tournament with a 646 total (320-326) to successfully defend its state team championship.

Note: The NIAA state girls golf tournament was presented by the Farmers Insurance Group.
