McKimmey, Landerfelt advance for Douglas tennis

Douglas High’s Courtney McKimmey and Madelyn Landerfelt kept their ultimate goals alive on Friday at the Division I Northern Region Tennis Championships at Caughlin Athletic Club in Reno.

Both won two matches to advance to the girls singles semifinals, and in the process, stayed alive in pursuit of state tournament berths.

McKimmey, a senior, won her quarterfinal match against Amy deNardo of Reno 6-1, 6-2. McKimmey entered the tournament as the Sierra League’s No. 2 seed and deNardo as the High Desert League’s No. 3.

Landerfelt, a freshman who is the Sierra League’s No. 1 seed, defeated her Carson opponent (6-1, 6-1) and fourth-seeded McQueen opponent (6-1, 7-5) to advance.

McKimmey will face Reno’s undefeated McCall Board in one semifinal today while Landerfelt plays Reno’s No. 2 seeded McKenna Levitt. The semifinals are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and the finals at noon.

The top three finishers in the singles and doubles brackets qualify for the state tournament next week in Las Vegas.

In girls doubles play, two Douglas had two teams lose in the quarterfinals. Ingrid Carlson and Bryana McNamara won their first match of the day before losing to a Reed team 6-3, 6-0. Likewise, Kelly Sonnemann and Katelin Teigen began their day with a win before falling in the quarterfinals against Reno’s No. 2 seeded team 6-2, 6-3.

Tara Cottrill and Kellie Hergenrader lost their first match of the day to Reno’s third-seeded team.

In boys doubles, Joey Swisher and Keaton Peters lost their second-round match 6-2, 6-2 against McQueen’s fourth-seeded team.
