Tigers show progress in loss to Manogue

On paper, Bishop Manogue was dominant Tuesday afternoon en route to a 17-1 boys tennis victory at Douglas.

Douglas coach Rod Smith, however, was encouraged by the performance he saw against a Manogue team that was the Division I Northern Region Tournament runner-up in 2012. He even felt the Tigers played better than they had last week in their season-opening 10-8 loss to Churchill County.

“This may sound a little crazy, but we played much better against Manogue than we did last week in our narrow loss to Churchill,” Douglas coach Rod Smith said. “Today, our boys played some pretty good tennis against a very talented and experienced Manogue team.

“Although, we’re making steady progress, we have still have a ways to go become a good tennis team. I expect our team to improve significantly in the next two weeks.”

The Tigers collected their only win in the third round from the No. 1 doubles team of Keaton Peters-Joey Swisher.

“Our No. 1 doubles team is starting to get in-sync,” Smith said. “According to them, they are only at the base of the proverbial mountain and yet, the peak is within their range.”
