McKenna Kynett scored three goals and the defense pitched a shutout Saturday morning as the Douglas High girls soccer team rang up a 5-0 season-opening victory against Reed in Sparks.
Kynett scored in the 10th minute and Kassidy Freitas blasted in a long shot taken from a free kick in the 21st minute as Douglas took command early in Jenny Jaggard’s debut as head coach. Not only was the performance impressive against a perennial playoff contender, it came at the end of a two-week stretch in which the Tigers were limited to indoor practices due to smoke from the Rim fire.
“I was very pleasantly surprised,” Jaggard said. “I wasn’t sure how they would respond to being out on grass for the first time in so long, but they came out and played really good soccer.”
The Tigers led 2-0 at halftime and then broke the contest wide open with two goals scored within a minute of each other. Alissa Holley scored in the 55th minute and Kynett scored in the 56th minute to extend the lead to 4-0.
Kynett completed her hat trick in the 77th minute on a long volley shot she took with the ball near eye level.
“It was an incredible shot,” Jaggard said of the sophomore. “She just took it out of the air and volleyed it over the keeper’s head.”
Douglas goalkeeper Corryne Millett, aided by a stalwart effort by the defense, kept Reed off the scoreboard. Freshman Grace Brooks came on to play the final 15 minutes in the net and preserved the shutout.
“We played very well defensively,” Jaggard said. “They had very few chances.”
The Tigers played at Wooster on Tuesday (the result was not available at press time) and play their home opener Saturday against Galena.
Four different players scored as the Douglas J.V. squad opened its season with a 5-3 win at Reed.
Ashley Melandow scored twice to lead the offense, while freshmen Megan Sandow, Jessica Withrow and Jillyan Jacobson added one goal each.
Holland Chambers, Sando, Melandow and Withrow each contributed one assist.
Defensively, coach Jessi Chitwood praised the performances of freshman sweeper Bailee Robinson and junior goalkeeper Morgan Weston. The Douglas roster includes 14 freshmen.
