It’s been a big year already for Sierra Lutheran High School graduate Wade Meddles.
The Gardnerville resident enjoyed a breakout cross country season for Eastern Kentucky University in the fall, earning All-American honors with a 38th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
This weekend he’ll look to clinch his second All-American nod of the year as he competes in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The 5K will be the final race of the meet on Saturday, set for approximately 3:20 p.m. It will be televised on ESPNU and ESPN3.com online, which is available to Charter Communications customers.
He qualified for the national finals by taking second in his regional heat with a time of 14:06.31
In the 24-runner field, Meddles is ranked No. 16 coming into the weekend.
Meddles, who won multiple state titles at Sierra Lutheran and was a multi-time winner of the Gatorade State Runner of the Year distinction while in high school, spent his first two college seasons at Azusa Pacific University.
While there he earned a pair of NAIA All-American honors.
He transferred to Eastern Kentucky coming into this year and made an immediate impact on the cross country team.
He placed third at the NCAA regionals with a time of 30:08.89 on a 10K course, earning All-Southeast Region honors. He also posted a 24:16 in the 8K at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational.
