Seniors win Powder Puff battle

It took a quarter for the offenses to find their rhythm, another quarter for the teams to get all of the scoring out of the way and then the second half turned into a story of two staunch defenses.

In the end, the senior class claimed its fourth consecutive victory in Douglas High School’s 15th annual Mountain Madness Powder Puff football game Friday night, defeating the juniors 12-6.

The win bumped the seniors all-time record in the game to 10-5.

Both teams mounted lengthy drives in the first quarter, but neither was able to push the ball inside the other team’s 20-yard line.

The seniors broke through first early in the second quarter when Marissa Cowan cut up the middle for a 22-yard touchdown run.

The juniors’ next drive stalled and the seniors quickly stretched out their lead.

Quarterback Aspen Robinson fired a strike down the sideline to Shawnee McFadden for a 55-yard touchdown and the 12-0 lead.

Needing a score to keep the game from breaking open, the junior class answered the call on its following possession.

Jessa Gansberg set the juniors up with several lengthy runs as her team drove the ball to the seniors’ 35-yard line with less than a minute left in the half.

Junior quarterback Kelly Sonnemann then took the ball on a keeper sweep, cut back toward the middle and scored from 35 yards out, cutting the score to 12-6.

Coming out of halftime, the juniors put together another solid drive, getting long runs from Amber Taylor and Gansberg. They pushed the ball as far as the senior 9-yard line, but couldn’t punch in the tying touchdown as the senior defense clamped down.

That became the story of the remainder of the game as each team’s defense didn’t allow another score.

The senior class has now won 12-6, 16-0, 14-8 and 21-6 in the last four Powder Puff games.

Prior to that, the juniors had won three in a row — 26-22, 20-14 and 28-18.
