The Douglas boys swim team found its 30-meet win streak in serious jeopardy Saturday afternoon against Reno High School.
Thanks to an assist from their strong group of divers, though, the Tigers boosted the streak to 31.
Douglas’ Anthony Sellers, Jordan White and Tyler Vandenburg swept the top three places in the diving event, delivering the decisive 19 points in a 152-141 win over perennial powerhouse Reno.
The divers, which also include girls first-place winner Lindsey Johnston and boys senior Charles Winans — who didn’t compete on Saturday — have boosted the Tigers’ scores all season long.
“We are making T-shirts that say ‘Hug a Diver,’” Douglas coach Sarah Davenport said. “The men’s team won due to the dive team.”
Indeed, Reno captured first place in all but three swimming events. Douglas, though, had enough depth to stay close and got the extra push from the diving sweep.
The Douglas girls’ team ran its win streak to 45 with a 190-94 win over Reno.
