Where are they now? Updates on former local high school standouts

Bethany Wurster (Douglas ’11 ), soph., Nevada: Nevada finished 15th at Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Hawaii last week. Nevada next competes at the Fresno Lexus Classic on April 15 before the Mountain West Championships on April 25.


Grant Denny (Douglas ’11), fr., Feather River: No competitions last week. Feather River leads the overall men’s rodeo season standings in the West Coast Region. Denny leads the region in bareback riding with 951 points.


Chris Balcom-Miller (Douglas ’05), Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox Double-A), RHP: Balcom-Miller broke camp with the Red Sox Double-A club in Portland, Maine. Portland opened its season Thursday.

Tyler Hoelzen (Douglas ’09), sr., LHP, Sacramento State: The Hornets are 15-4 on the season. Hoelzen has a 3.24 ERA with a 1-1 record. He has 14 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched and has walked six batters.

Cody Begovich (Douglas ’12), fr., LHP/OF, Northeastern State (Oklahoma): Begovich has played in 11 games this season and hit two home runs for the Riverhawks, who are 15-13 on the year.

Troy Torres (Douglas ’09), jr., 3B, Tabor College: Tabor is 20-8 on the season and currently riding a six-game win streak. Torres has started nine games for Tabor and played in a total of 22. He has a double and four RBIs.

Kyle Ford (Douglas ’10), jr., C, Avila University (Mo.): Avila is 15-12 on the year.

Ryan Ford (Douglas ’10), fr., 3B/P, Avila University (Mo.): Avila is 15-12 on the year.

Kameron Van Winkle (Douglas ’11), soph., C, Feather River: The Golden Eagles are 15-11 on the year after losing twice to Siskiyous last week. Van Winkle has played in 16 games.

Shane Fencl Douglas ’11), soph., SS, Feather River: Grey-shirting.

Matt Thomas (Douglas ’11), soph., RHP, Feather River: Thomas is 5-1 on the year with a 2.23 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched.

Walker Gemmill (Douglas ’11), soph., C, Lassen: Gemmill has driven in 11 runs on the year with a .261 average. He’s played in 18 games.

Cody Lommori (Douglas ’11), soph., 1B, American River: Lommori has played in 15 games this season.


Stephanie Harper (Douglas ’09), sr., P/1B, Concord: Harper is batting .362 with four doubles, a triple, nine RBIs and a stolen base. She has also pitched in seven games, striking out thirteen with a 3-0 record.

Jenna Geyer (Douglas ’12), fr., 1B, Feather River: Geyer has driven in five runs and hit two doubles and a home run on the year.

Amanda Caras (Douglas ’12), fr., IF, Santa Barbara College: Caras is hitting .276 with four doubles and six RBIs on the year. She has played in 30 games.


Jessica Waggoner (Douglas ’09), jr., Army: Waggoner won the discus in the Dick Shea Open with a throw of 47.02 meters.

Wade Meddles (Sierra Lutheran ’10), jr., Eastern Kentucky: Meddles competed in the 5,000 meter run at the Stanford Invitational over the weekend, running a personal best 13:52.16 and winning his heat. The time is the best in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and fourth-fastest in EKU history.

Nick Maestretti (Douglas ’12), fr., Kansas: The Jayhawks will compete in a pair of meets in Arizona this weekend.

Becky Grabow (Sierra Lutheran ’12), fr., Pacific: Grabow broke her own school record in the 5K at the SF STate Distance Carnival last week, running an 18:26.13 to finish 12th in her section.

Davey Fisher (Douglas ’09), sr., Pacific Lutheran: No meets last week.

Garrett Tenney (Douglas ’10), jr., Jamestown College: Outdoor season opens April 6 at the Valley City State Invitational in North Dakota.

Craig Stratton (Douglas ’10), soph., San Diego Mesa College: Stats not available.

Andrew Cobourn (Douglas ’12), fr., Chico State: Red-shirting.

Sadie Gastelum (Douglas ’12), fr., Chico State: Red-shirting.

Nathanael Williams (Sierra Lutheran ’12), fr., Colorado School of Mines: Stats not available.
