Wolves lose at Smith Valley

Joel Gomez rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns for the Coleville High football team Saturday afternoon in its 26-14 season-opening loss at Smith Valley.

Smith Valley scored two unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to break open a 6-6 struggle between the two rival schools who met in a non-conference contest to open the season.

Gomez, a senior playing his first game at quarterback for the Wolves, carried most of the offensive load with 27 carries, two touchdowns and his two-point conversion run in the fourth quarter. Gomez also completed five of 17 passes for 62 yards.

Gage Sullivan caught two passes for 32 yards while sophomore Ignacio Estrada-Cota added two receptions for 15 yards and Ryan Staats one reception for 15 yards.

Tanner DeBusk threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others to lead the Smith Valley Bulldogs. DeBusk rushed for 105 yards on 30 carries and completed four of 14 passes for 105 yards. Monte Stanton caught two passes, covering distances of 53 and 35 yards for touchdowns. Dalton Wright also rushed for 117 yards on 19 carries for the Bulldogs.

On the defensive side for Coleville, Staats was in on 11 tackles (five solo), while sophomore Logan Hardy had 10 tackles (nine solo). Ashton Mitchell contributed nine tackles, including two quarterback sacks, and Gomez added nine tackles. Josh Disbro had five tackles with one sack. Senior Stephanie Sandoval was credited with one solo tackle in her football debut.

Gomez also punted five times for a 42.0-yard average.

The Wolves play their home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. against Eureka. The Vandals opened their season Friday with a 49-0 loss to Virginia City.

Note: Coleville has added a home game to its schedule on Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. against Sierra Lutheran. … Smith Valley plays a Northern Division IV conference game at Coleville on Sept. 27.
