Genoa ladies club champion takes game to new level

At age 55, Ann-Sofie Allen keeps improving her golf game.

Just consider that she recently won the Genoa Lakes Ladies’ Golf Club Championship for the first time with a low gross score of 247 for three rounds on the Genoa Lakes Golf Club Lakes and Ranch courses.

Mary Zimmerman earned runner-up honors in the 14-player field with her score of 267, while Jeanne Fadem (270), Judith Hanson (272) and Jackie Aynesworth (305) won their respective flights during the tournament on Aug. 12, Aug. 14 and Aug. 19.

“This was the first time we’ve ever played three rounds for the club championship and the first time we’ve played both courses,” said Allen, a native of Sweden who moved to Carson Valley with her husband in 2009. “That’s really nice to be able to say you’re the champion of both courses.”

Allen carded an 83 on the (ladies) par-73 Ranch Course, then shot 83 and 81 on the Lakes Course. Allen said her opening round highlight came on the par-4 13th hole when she narrowly missed a putt for eagle from the forward tee.

Allen took her game to a new level on Tuesday, however, when she shot a lifetime best 2-under par 70 on the Lakes Course during a regularly scheduled Genoa Lakes Ladies’ Golf Club tournament.

“After playing the club championship, I was able to relax a little better,” she said. “It was hard to believe I could shoot 2-under. I just hope I can do it again some day.”

Her goal now is to card a score that matches her age.

“You always wish you could shoot your age,” Allen said. “My goal is to develop a good short game. As you get older, you lose some distance, so your short game becomes more important.”

Just as important, Allen enjoys living and playing in Genoa.

“We have a good group of girls,” she said of the ladies club. “It’s a lot of fun.

“I love being outdoors; I love hiking and skiing, and golf is my passion. It’s motivating to be here; this is the best place to live if you love the outdoors.”
