A 2014-15 Kirkwood cross-country season ski pass will be the grand prize on Aug. 30 when Kirkwood Mountain Resort hosts the 34th annual Kirkwood 5K/10K Adventure Trail Run.
The races — which start with one-mile and half-mile fun runs for kids at 9 a.m., followed by the 5K and 10K trail and road runs, are being presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers running club and the Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department under a special use permit from the Forest Service.
The 5K runners will loop through the neighborhood on paved roads and across a meadow with a short section of trail. The 10K runners will test their aerobic fitness on the adventure trail run that follows Red Cliffs bike trail up the mountain behind the main Lodge and wind down the mountain on dirt roads and single track trails.
Race registration forms are available online at the Tahoe Mountain Milers website — www.tahoemtnmilers.org — or may be picked up locally at CV Sports at the Douglas County Library in Minden, or by calling 775-588-2864. Pre-registered runners postmarked by Saturday will be guaranteed a T-shirt.
Early registration fees are $30 and race day registration is $40 for the 5K/10K, which includes a chance to win a cross-country ski pass. There is also a special Youth Club category for participants of cross country and track teams. The fee is $10 and does not include a T-shirt or a chance to win the ski pass. The cost for the kids fun run is $10 and does not include a T-shirt or a chance to win the cross country ski pass. All kids will receive a commemorative “Make Your Own Medal.”
All finishers in the 5K and 10K will receive a ceramic medal created by Lorraine Felix of Felix Pottery in Gardnerville. Proceeds from the race benefit the Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department. After the age group awards ceremony, a raffle drawing will be held for all participants in the 5K/10K runs.
