Hot Shots win 8U state title

Very little separated the four teams entered last weekend in the All-World Sports 8U state tournament in Reno.

So it came as no real surprise for the Carson Valley Hot Shots to come back after losing two straight games in pool play and win their next three Saturday and Sunday en route to the tournament championship.

The Hot Shots edged the Winnemucca Gold Rush 4-2 and rallied for a 4-3 win against the Nevada Sharks on Saturday, then posted a 9-4 triumph against the Sharks in the championship game Sunday morning at Vaughn Middle School. It was a rematch of the final the two teams played two weeks ago at the All-World Sports World Series in Gardnerville and Carson City.

“Every time we played each other, it was always a tough game,” Hot Shots coach Matt Tretton said. “There were never any easy wins.”

Tretton noted that the Hot Shots won three of six tournaments during the All-World Sports season, while the Gold Rush won two and the Sharks one. The Reno Predators were the fourth team in the tournament.

The Hot Shots broke out their offense in the championship game, as all nine players in the lineup contributed to their 14-hit attack. Talia Tretton and Addie Doerr had two RBI while Malia DeLeon, Ellie Boggs, Cadance Boehner and Kaelyn Lange each drove in one run.

“It was a really good outing,” Tretton said. “The girls were really aggressive at the plate.”

In the earlier game, the Hot Shots kept their title hopes alive when they scored four runs in the top of the third inning to rally from a 3-0 deficit to knock off the Carson City-based Sharks.

Boggs, Boehner and Lange delivered key hits during the big third inning. Lange hit 2-for-2 in the game in addition to pitching the four-inning distance with 10 strikeouts and three earned runs allowed.

The Hot Shots began their comeback Saturday with a win against the Gold Rush behind the pitching of Anna Sharpe and a two-run homer by Boehner. Sharpe pitched 2.2 innings of four-hit ball in the three-inning contest, with six strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

Note: The 14U Hot Shots club is playing this week at the ASA/USA Western National Championship Tournament in Pasco, Wash.
