Girls soccer summer events set

First-year Douglas High School girls soccer coach Werner Christen announced the team’s summer schedule this week with at least one eye on the start of the regular season in late August and another eye cast toward the postseason in November.

Prospective Douglas varsity and junior varsity players will meet Monday for the first day of non-mandatory conditioning sessions from 6-8 p.m. at the high school. Sessions will be held Monday and Thursdays through July and up until the Tigers’ annual alumni game on Aug. 11.

Team tryouts are scheduled for Aug. 16, 18-19. The Tigers kick off their season Aug. 28-30 in Las Vegas, including games against Centennial, Green Valley and two-time defending Division I state champion Arbor View.

“This is the toughest schedule we’ve ever had in this program, by far,” Christen said. “We’re getting a chance to play three really good teams down there, and that’s what we want. That’s only going to help us at the end of the season.”

The Tigers are coming off a 2013 season in which they compiled a 14-2-2 overall record, won the Sierra League championship and reached the region tournament semifinals before losing 1-0 to Galena. Jenny Jaggard stepped down after her first season as head coach and Christen accepted the position in March.

The Douglas Tigers Youth Soccer Camp for girls and boys 5-12 years of age is set for July 22-24 on the high school soccer field. In addition, a camp for seventh-through-12th grade students will be held the same three days.

Participants in the youth camp will meet from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Instruction will be provided by Douglas coaching staff members and returning varsity players.

The cost is $60 ($70 after July 15), which includes a complementary soccer ball and camp T-shirt. Players are asked to wear appropriate soccer attire, including cleats and shin guards.

Proceeds from the camps will go to the high school girls soccer program.
