Tour of the Carson Valley set for Sunday

The Carson Valley Visitors Authority and Bike the West are combining on Sunday to offer the seventh annual Tour of the Carson Valley — Barbecue and Ice Cream Social to bicycling enthusiasts.

Event director Curtis Fong describes the event as a “Kick-Off to Summer” that starts and finishes at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa. The event not only promotes bicycling, but also the variety of other outdoor activities from mountain biking to hiking and more with rest stops provided by the Carson Valley Trails Association, Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and the Alpine Trails Association.

This is a “celebration of the cycling culture and more of a social event,” Fong observed. All types of pedal powered cycles are invited to participate. From Unicycles to three-wheeled recumbents, retro road bikes, high wheelers, custom bikes, cruisers and more.

Four non-competitive tour options are available, including an 11-mile family fun ride, a 20-mile bike & hike option with the Carson Valley Trails Association, and a 44- or 60-mile tour (adding Kingsbury Grade Climb) along the foothill of the Sierra, retracing the historic routes of pioneers, wagon trains and the Pony Express up to Woodfords Station and around Diamond Valley, home to the legendary Snowshoe Thompson.

Participants will receive a Carson Valley welcome packet, a custom event T-shirt, event water bottle and a fully supported ride with rest stops stocked with food and beverage. At the finish line, a barbecue is provided by the Tahoe Ridge Winery Market Place & Bistro, as well as ice cream provided by the Hoch Family Creamery and live entertainment by “A Class Act.”

Onsite registration and packet pick up will be held Saturday from noon to 8 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Express in Minden, at the junction of highways 395 and 88.

Bike Habitat will provide bicycle safety checks and technical support for the event. The ride starts Sunday at 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. for the various ride options.

The event is sponsored by The Carson Valley Visitors Authority with a grant funded by the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Go to for information.

Bike the West is producing the event, which also produces Tour de Tahoe — Bike Big Blue on Sept. 7 and the 23rd annual OATBRAN — One Awesome Tour Bike Ride Across Nevada on Sept. 21- 27. Visit for information.
