Seven-run first inning propels Tigers to win

A seven-run first inning on Tuesday put the Douglas High softball team on track to a 12-4 Northern Division I victory at home against McQueen.

Leonna Mortimer drove in two runs with a bases loaded single and Shaena Robinson hit a two-run triple later in the inning as Douglas improved its overall season record to 3-2-1 (1-0 league). McQueen dropped to 2-4 overall.

“It was great to come out in the first inning and put seven runs on the board,” Douglas coach Rob Parks said. “And with Kali on the mound, we were pretty confident.”

Junior ace Kali Sargent pitched a complete game eight-hitter to go with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Sargent also hit 3-for-4 with two RBI while Kelly Sonnemann went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and four runs scored. The Tigers finished with 13 hits while nine different players contributed hits or scored runs. Mortimer was also 2-for-2 in her stolen base attempts.

Freshman Corryne Diaz walked to lead off the first inning for Douglas. Allison Meyer was hit by a pitch and Sonnemann walked to load the bases for Mortimer, who delivered a single to put the Tigers on top, 2-0.

Douglas hosts Hug Saturday in an 8:30 a.m. league contest.
