Sargent leads Tigers to tourney win

Kali Sargent used her arm and bat to help the Douglas High softball team to a 2-1 victory Friday against Vintage (Napa, Calif.) during the Victory Preseason Tournament in Elk Grove, Calif.

Douglas went 1-1-1 Thursday and Friday in games played at Hal Bartholomew Sports Park. The Tigers tied Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) 5-5 Thursday and lost 5-2 against Lodi, Calif., Friday.

Later on Friday, Sargent pitched a 2-hitter to go with three strikeouts and 1 walk in seven innings of work against the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion Crushers. She hit 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Allison Meyer also hit 1-for-4, freshman Corryne Diaz 1-for-4, Kelly Sonnemann 1-for-3 and Makayla Shaver 1-for-3 for the Tigers.

Against Lodi, another Sac-Joauin Section Division I playoff qualifier in 2013, Mortimer hit 1-for-3 with a triple, Diaz 1-for-3 and Katie Chieffo 1-for-2. Layne Waggoner pitched all five innings, allowed 10 hits, struck out 2 and walked 3.

Diaz hit 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI for Douglas in its five-inning tie against Oak Ridge. Leonna Mortimer hit 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sonnemann was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored. Maddie Parks was 1-for-2 with 1 RBI, Allison Meyer 1-for-3 and Sargent 1-for-3.

Sargent allowed 5 runs on 9 hits to go with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.
