Introduction to golf clinic scheduled

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is offering an introduction to golf clinic on April 12 for youth 5-16 years of age at the Carson Valley Golf Course.

Professionals at the Carson Valley Golf Course will cover all the basic including full swing, chipping, putting, and etiquette.

Participants will be divided into groups based on age, starting with 5-6 year olds from noon to 1:15 p.m. The 7-8 age group will meet from 1:30-2:45 p.m. and 9-16 year olds will meet from 3-4:15 p.m.

Club rentals, golf balls and refreshments will be provided.

Molly Youth Awards nominations sought

MEFIYI (Me-for-Incredible-Youth, Inc.) is celebrating its 10th annual Molly Youth Awards Banquet May 12 at the Carson Valley Inn.

Applications are now being accepted for Molly Youth Awards, which honor outstanding youth of Douglas County. Three $1,000 college scholarships will be awarded to seniors who apply. Forty student-athletes in all will be selected for the 2014 class.

Applicants eligible for this recognition must be between the ages of 9 and 18 and a resident of Douglas County. The nominated student-athletes must qualify in each of following areas: Academic excellence, athletic participation and community service. A nomination form must be postmarked by mail or emailed by April 7.

The event will offer a community raffle with a grand prize 7 day Las Vegas Fall Getaway that will include tickets to Nevada-UNLV football game.

Genoa Lakes Ladies Golf Club season to begin

The Genoa Lakes Ladies’ Golf Club will kick off its 2014 season on April 1 with a low net/low gross tournament at the Lakes Course.

Women golfers age 18 and over are invited to join in for weekly tournaments that are offered for members on Tuesday mornings at one of the Genoa Lakes courses. The season continues through mid-October.

A $5 buy-in is required to participate in the weekly tournaments. Membership dues are $145 per year and cover GHIN handicap dues, three complimentary luncheons, a hole-in-one fund and year-end awards.

Members with an established GHIN handicap are eligible to participate in monthly Northern Nevada Women’s Golf Association’s High Sierra team play tournaments for an additional $5 per year. Team play provides the opportunity to meet women golfers from Northern Nevada and play many of the area’s golf courses.

Summer volleyball registration to begin

Early registration for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department summer softball league is now under way.

Games are scheduled to begin the week of April 21. All games are played from 6:30-9 p.m. at Lampe Park. League play will be scheduled on Wednesday nights for women’s league, Tuesday nights for men’s D league, Tuesday or Wednesday nights for men’s Open and Thursday nights for co-ed Open.

The cost is $475 per team for 10 games and a postseason tournament. After the early registration period ends on April 4, the cost will increase to $525 per team. The deadline to register for the season is April 11. Players must be 18 years or older to participate.

Coed volleyball league set

A youth coed volleyball league open to students in third grade through high school is being offered by the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department.

The objective of the league is teach girls and boys volleyball fundamentals, teamwork and good sportsmanship in a fun recreational environment.

The league will include teams from Carson Valley as well as Lake Tahoe, Yerington, Smith Valley and Coleville. Games will be played at Carson Valley Middle School in a season that extends from March until May.

Teams are being organized for third-fourth grade, fifth-sixth grade, seventh-eighth grade and high school. The cost is $80 for each division. Participants will be assigned to a team through a draft to be held March 10 and 12. Volunteer coaches are also needed.

MEFIYI Sports Bash on April 21-24

Boys and girls ages 6-14 will have a chance to learn skills and drills in basketball, non-contact football, tennis and volleyball during the MEFIYI Spring Break Sports Bash on April 21-24.

The camp schedule for basketball will be 9 a.m.-noon. The football, volleyball and tennis camps will be held 1-4 p.m.

Camps will focus on the fundamentals associated with each sport. Camp director is retired NFL player JoJo Townsell and J.P. Albert, a Douglas High School football coaching staff member. Guest instructors will include Douglas High School coaches and athletes.

The cost is $75 or $120 for two camps, family camp fee is $65 for $110 for two camps.

Parents must complete a permission form at time of registration.

Alta Alpina Challenge registration open

The Alta Alpina Cycling Club is hosting its annual challenge on June 28. This event allows cyclists to explore the eastern Sierra near Lake Tahoe on scenic roads from Carson Valley to Alpine County.

Participants can ride as little or as far as they want, up to 200 miles, or from the relatively flat foothills to the “the world’s toughest double century” with more than 20,000 feet of climbing. The ride is limited to 499 riders. Frequent stops are provided for food and refreshments, as well as roving assistance vehicles, and a post-ride dinner. Visit for details or to register.
