Josh Smithen top-10 finisher at P.A. meet


Josh Smithen was a top-10 finisher in his boys 13-14 age group for the Douglas Dolfins against a high caliber field of swimmers March 2 at the annual Pacific Swimming Association Zone All-Star Developmental Meet in Burlingame, Calif.

Smith, a 14-year-old Douglas High School freshman, placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.55) and 13th in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke at Burlingame High School. He also anchored the Pacific Swimming Zone 4 200 medley relay team that placed sixth (1:56.17) and 200 freestyle “B” relay that placed ninth (1:49.27).

Eight Dolfins were selected to compete for the Zone 4 team in a meet geared towards athletic development in swimmers 14 years and-younger. Zone 4 represents the areas of Reno, Carson City, Douglas County, Lake Tahoe and Eastern Sierra.

Other Dolfins who competed include:

Remy Hill-Holeman was one of two 9-10 year old boys representing the Dolfins. He placed 16th in the 50 freestyle, 17th in the 50 butterfly and 6th in the 100 individual medley. He also swam the second leg for the boys 9-10 200 freestyle relay team that placed seventh and anchored the 200 medley “A” team that placed ninth.

Connor Taylor placed 18th in both the boys 9-10 age group 50 backstroke and 100 IM and 17th in the 50 breaststroke, where he dropped 3.83 seconds with a new Pacific B time of 49.50 seconds. He also competed for the Zone 4 200 medley “A” relay and the 200 medley “A” team.

Nikki Jackson, the team’s only 11-12 girls representative, placed 20th in both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, 19th in the 100 butterfly and swam for the Zone 4 200 freestyle relay that placed eighth and the 200 medley relay that placed ninth.

Kaila Duffy placed 15th in the girls 13-14 50 freestyle, 19th in the 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 100 butterfly, right on Junior Olympic qualifying pace. She swam the first leg for the Zone 4 200 freestyle “A” relay that placed eighth and third leg in the 200 medley “B” relay.

Kaela Forvilly also swam in the 13-14 girls division, where she placed 11th in the 100 backstroke, 20th in the 100 breaststroke and 16th in the 200 individual medley. She took the first legs for the Zone 4 200 freestyle “B” relay that placed ninth and the 200 medley “A” relay that placed seventh.

Taylor Sullivan placed 17th in the girls 13-14 age group 100 backstroke, 16th in the 100 breaststroke and 15th in the 200 IM. She also swam legs for both the Zone 4 200 freestyle “B” relay and the 200 medley “A” relay.

CJ Hill-Holeman placed 18th in the boys 13-14 age group 50 freestyle, 19th in the 200 freestyle and 17th in the 200 IM. He also swam for the Zone 4 200 freestyle “A” relay that placed 10th and the leadoff leg in the 200 medley “B” relay.
