Singer loses twice at state wrestling

Zach Singer knew the competition would be extremely tough Saturday at the NIAA State Wrestling Championships in Primm. Even so, the Douglas High 182-pounder would have liked to done better than his 0-2 record indicates.

“Zach did a great job all season,” said David Singer, Douglas coach and Zach’s father. “He is disappointed with the outcome at state, but he is certainly looking forward to returning next season.”

The Douglas junior took an early lead in his first match at the Star of the Desert Arena, however, he was eventually pinned in 2:54 by Jeremy Cedillo of Liberty. Singer was then knocked out of the bracket with a 15-5 loss against Julian Whitehead of Centennial.

“The second guy was pretty tough,” coach Singer said. “And to give you an idea how tough that weight class was, he (Whitehead) didn’t place. (Brady) Rivera (of Carson, Northern Region champion) didn’t even place. That’s how tough those guys were.”

Singer ended his season with a 24-11 overall record (19 wins by pin), including a first-place performance at the Sparks tournament and second-place at the Carson Valley Lions Club Invitational.

Roosevelt Smith (42-3) of Canyon Spring defeated Elvin Cruz of Shadow Ridge in the state 182-pound finals, 6-5. Rory Anderson of Damonte Ranch took third-place in the bracket.

Green Valley captured the team championship with 97 points, while Cimarron-Memorial and Spring Valley tied for second with 76 points each. Spanish Springs was the North’s top team with 68.5 points for fifth-place.

Former Douglas standout Sullivan Cauley, captured second-place in the 195-pound weight class. Cauley won two matches on points, 5-4 and 15-5, before he was pinned by Centennial’s Hunter Brown in the finals in 5:45. Cauley took a one-point lead to the final period, however, Brown scored a quick takedown. Cauley tied the score with an escape, only to be taken down by Brown again and then pinned with 15 seconds left in regulation.
