Peterson sets pace in 5K

Karina Peterson emerged as the overall 5K winner last Saturday during the Ascent Runs Winter Trail Series in Carson City.

The 14-year-old Minden runner won the Love Can Be Cold 5K with a fast time of 20 minutes, 53 seconds (6:43.5 pace) at Carson River Park. It marked her third straight win in the five-race series, which wraps up with the C Hill Run on March 8 in Carson City.

Carson City’s Steven Kubel was second overall and first in the men’s 60-69 age group with a 23:24 clocking.

Davy Rowe of Genoa ran 25:03 to place third overall in the 5K and first in the men’s 40-49 age category. Tim O’Neill of Gardnerville placed sixth overall in 29:11, good for first-place in the men’s 50-59 age group, and Bruce Beamer of Minden placed seventh in 29:48, good for second in the men’s 60-69 division.

Heather Hoyle of Minden clocked a 30:51 to finish as the fifth woman and first in her 40-49 age group. Pam Flowers of Minden, in 32:17, was the sixth woman to finish and first in her 50-59 age group, followed by Minden’s Kathy Beamer in 34:18.

Carson City’s Brett Long cruised to first-place overall in the 7-mile event with a time of 53:38, followed by Ross McMahan of Incline Village in 58:21.

Andi Pape was the first woman to finish and eighth overall in 1:04:25. Norah Gastelum was the fourth woman and first in her 40-49 age group with a 1:11:21 clocking.

Dave Norvell of Minden placed fifth overall and first in his men’s 50-59 division with a time of 1:02:07.
