Kendrick builds mat momentum

Ian Kendrick has a wave of momentum going for him heading into the Division I Northern Region Wrestling Championships this weekend in Reno.

The Douglas High senior is the Sierra League’s top-seeded heavyweight and is looking to ride that wave through the tournament today and Saturday at Reno High School — and right on to the state tournament.

The top three finishers in each weight class qualify to advance to the NIAA State Championships next week in Las Vegas. Kendrick is one of the Douglas wrestlers who has aspirations of making that trip.

“Being a senior, this is kind of his farewell tour,” coach David Singer. “He has had a great season, and really just started to turn it around in the last month.”

The 6-foot-3, 228-pound Tiger has won his last eight matches coming into the tournament. Though seeded No. 1 from the Sierra League, Kendrick will be up against three High Desert League wrestlers who have beaten him this season — Chase Hauder of Spanish Springs, Damon Ramos of McQueen and Reed’s Damon Gebhardt.

Hauder is the defending region champion and looks like the man to beat once again. Ramos was a gold medal winner last month at the Carson Valley Lions Club Invitational.

Douglas also has two No. 2 seeds, senior 160-pounder Garret Seward and freshman 195-pounder Ryland DeSomber. Zachary Singer (182 pounds), Josh Jensen (170), Will Williams (113), Ryan Adams and Ian Pieller (220) are No. 3 seeds. Williams and Adams are freshmen.

Kendel Isham (106), Parker Biehn (132) and Ryan Weese (138) are top-six seeds.

Kendrick, Biehn and Seward will be the only seniors in the lineup. Another senior, Chance Thoene, has been sidelined for the past month due to a knee injury. Thoene was the Tigers’ lone state qualifier last year.

The Tigers have six freshmen in the lineup.
