Panthers take consolation title

The Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School seventh grade volleyball team won two of three matches Tuesday to capture the consolation title at the Tah-Neva League Tournament in Carson City.

Pau-Wa-Lu lost a hard-fought three-set match against Incline, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9, in the opening round at Eagle Valley Middle School. The opener was a rematch of the South Tahoe Optimist Tournament championship match last month.

The Panthers rebounded from their loss to sweep through the consolation bracket with victories against Whittell and Eagle Valley. They got past Whittell 25-22, 25-16 and then Eagle Valley 25-15, 25-13.

Pau-Wa-Lu’s seventh grade squad finished its season with a 12-6 record.

Snowshoe race set for Feb. 23

The annual Fresh Tracks 5K Snowshoe Walk and Race is scheduled on Feb. 23 on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore.

Hosted by the Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club, the event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Camp Richardson Resort.

Early pre-registration by Saturday is only $20 and includes choice of swag, snowshoe rental if you need snowshoes, post-race refreshments, and continued day use of groomed Camp Richardson trails. Race day registration is $30.

The beneficiaries of the event are the Eric Nageotte-Lowe Scholarship Fund for the Heavenly Freestyle Team as well as Girls on the Run-Sierras.

Adult recreation volleyball sign-ups continue

Early registration for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department adult spring volleyball league will continue until today.

Four leagues are being offered: Women’s 6-on-6 league on Monday nights, Open A 4-on-4 league on Tuesdays, Coed C 6-on-6 league on Wednesdays and Coed B 6-on-6 league on Thursdays.

Teams are scheduled to begin play at the Carson Valley Middle School on March 3.

The early registration fee is $200, which includes eight regular season games and a single elimination postseason tournament. The fee will increase to $225 after Friday. The registration cutoff is Feb. 21.

High school tennis clinic underway

A beginner to advance tennis clinic being offered through Feb. 24 at 4-5 p.m. by the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is designed to provide an opportunity for high school aged students interested in learning tennis.

Classes will be held Mondays on the Lampe Park tennis courts under the direction of Douglas High School coaches Ginny Unger and Susan Cowan.

Classes will be held when weather conditions allow.

Students need to wear tennis shoes and bring a racket. The cost is $70.

Snow camping 101 offered

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is offering a for Snow Camping 101 course on March 29-30 designed to teach basic fundamentals and safety in winter camping.

Experienced TRTA guides will be on hand to share the fundamentals of winter weather, trip planning, backcountry cooking and staying warm. This challenging overnight program is designed for people who are already familiar with summer backpacking and camping techniques, and want to try their hand at snow camping.

The course is a hands-on program that will incorporate 18 hours of classroom instruction, demonstrations and scenarios out in the field. Specific location is still to be determined, but will take place on or near the Tahoe Rim Trail. The cost is $75 ($50 for TRTA members).

Line Drive University now open for season

Line Drive University is now open for the season. The facility offers baseball and fast-pitch softball batting cages as well as hitting, pitching and fielding practice areas.

Line Drive is located at 2577 Nowlin Rd., Minden. Hours of operation are 4-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Call 267-3331 for information.
