A half-dozen people have died in Douglas County vehicle accidents so far this year. According to the Nevada Department of Traffic Safety, four vehicle occupants, a pedestrian and a bicyclist were killed since Jan. 1. Of those accidents, two were alcohol related.
It looks from the Geomac map that the 255,560-acre Rim fire has finally laid down. The most recent burning in the northern part of the fire is 24 hours old with thermal satellite imaging indicating a similar age for hotspots. There are still areas that have burned in the last 12 hours on the fire’s southern flank near Tioga Pass Road. The number of firefighters working the blaze dropped below 2,800.
Air quality at the state’s monitor in Ranchos Aspen Park has been moderate through most of the night. There’s no indication we’re getting a lot of smoke, but the breeze was very light over the last 12 hours, so it’s probably just residual material.
We could see a little bit of weather today and tonight as there’s a slight chance of thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Expect partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 84 degrees. The wind will be calm, and then out of the northwest at 5 mph in the afternoon, except where there are thunderstorms.
