Outdoorsman missing in southern Sierra

On July 29, avid outdoorsman Matthew Greene, 39, was reported missing to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department.

Greene was passing through the Mammoth Lakes area to do some hiking, camping, and climb peaks throughout the Eastern Sierra. He is believed to have expressed interest in climbing Mount Lyell, south of Tuolumne Meadows, Mount Ritter and Mount Banner.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team has sent ground teams to search around the Ritter-Banner area. As a training mission, a CHP helicopter, along with the assistance of Mono County searchers, did a brief search of the area, including the Minarets. To date, Greene has not been located.

Since both Mount Ritter and Mount Banner are outside of Mono County, Mono searchers have not been officially activated. To actively help Greene’s family and friends in their search efforts, the team has used training opportunities to try and locate him. The team has verified that no summit register entries have been entered by Greene at either peak. They are analyzing forest service permits and emailing permit holders to try and gather additional information regarding Greene’s location.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Office has sent information in reference to this investigation to Madeira County and the Yosemite Search and Rescue Team as their jurisdiction is potentially involved. At this time, Mono County SAR has not been formally requested as mutual aid in this search.

Mr. Greene is 5-feet, 11-inches tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. Anyone with any information on Mr. Greene’s whereabouts or other tips for this investigation are encouraged to call Detective Hornbeck at the Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011 or the Mono County Sheriff’s Office at (760) 932-7549 ext. 7.
