The R-C Morning Report for June 23

A woman who left her children for at least 36 hours with a neighbor while she allegedly went to get high and gamble is facing a probation violation today in Douglas County District Court. Valerie J. Picotte, 45, faces a lengthy jail term on the gross misdemeanor child neglect for leaving her children with a neighbor she knew suffered from dementia.

Two red flag warnings in a row left us with a couple of animal incidents, but no major fires so far. A bear and her cub was spotted wandering through Indian Creek Campground on Saturday night, and a desert tortoise was found in the middle of the road in Minden on Sunday morning. Apparently there was also a tortoise loose in Minden on election night. Maybe he’s trying to make a break for it.

Two hikers slipped off an icy trail in Yosemite National Park near Wilma Lake off the Pacific Crest Trail. The high Sierra has still got some treacherous spots, so careful while you’re up there.

It’s summer, that’s for sure, but we won’t be seeing much in the way of hot temperatures over the last few days of June. Today will come the closest with temperatures in the upper 80s, but a new front rolling in on Wednesday will bring temperatures back down to the 70s.
