Sweet tradition for father and daughter
February 14, 2014
When David Olsen twirled his 5-year-old daughter Jessica around the dance floor at the Valentine’s Father/Daughter Sweethearts’ Dance in February 2001, their joy was contagious.
Photographed by Belinda Grant, the Olsens’ picture was published in the Feb. 14 issue of The Record-Courier.
Fast forward 13 years.
The Olsens have continued the tradition almost every February, but this year was special.
Jessica Olsen turns 19 on Monday, and in September, she is getting married to Kody Miller.
This year, she bought the tickets to surprise her dad.
Jessica wanted to make this father/daughter dance — their last — an evening to remember.
Jessica’s mother, Carlene Olsen, said her husband, now 48, was “beyond excited.”
“They had a great time,” Carlene said. “They went to Carson Valley Inn Steakhouse for dinner, then they went to the dance.”
Jessica wore her prom dress, and her dad dressed up in bright green.
Carlene said Jessica was proud to be one of the oldest daughters at the dance that has become a Douglas County tradition, mirrored in May by the mother/son dance.
“Jessica is getting married in September, and she knew this would be her last father/daughter dance. She wanted to do something special,” Carlene said.
