Genoans are having breakfast with Santa Claus this morning, and the Parade of Lights is still a go, according to Chamber Director Bill Chernock.
Seven inches of powdery snow fell in Nevada's first settlement overnight.
Jacks Valley Road was unplowed as Genoans cleared the streets in preparation for this morning's Breakfast with Santa.
Genoa Bar owner Willie Webb said he got up early to find the town socked in.
"I got up at 3 a.m. and saw the snow was blowing sideways," he said.
The light snow is drifting easily this morning with the temperature at 26 degrees.
Genoa Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Hutchison said that he'd heard the snow was lighter south of town. Hutchison was plowing town streets in preparation for visitors.
A half inch of snow was reported in the Gardnerville Ranchos this morning.
More than two feet of snow is on the ground in places in the Sierra.
A winter weather advisory is in effect through 10 a.m. today, but patches of blue sky were occasionally visible over Carson Valley.
According to the forecast, snow is likely before 4 p.m. under mostly cloudy skies. The high today is expected to hit 28 degrees. The wind is expected to blow 15 mph, gusting to 25 mph.
Chains or snow tires are required on highways 28, 50, 88, 395 south of Gardnerville, and over Kingsbury Grade this morning. If you're going into the mountains you'd better bring chains today.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting two accidents on Interstate 580 within minutes of one another around 8 a.m., an injury accident in the southbound lanes at the Bowers Mansion turnoff and a noninjury accident at the Highway 50 exchange. Another noninjury accident occurred at Fairview and Roop in Carson City. There is also an injury accident on Highway 50 near Fallon.
Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce Director Bill Chernock said the Parade of Lights will go forward tonight.
"The route will be clear by afternoon," he said in an email. "Forecast shows the snow diminishing all day. We're expecting about 21 degrees at 5 p.m."
Despite the snow, Genoa's Breakfast with Santa is bustling. The first sitting will continue to 10 a.m. with a second sitting 10:30 a.m. to noon.
