Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School had a banner year in speech and debate.

In October, the school received the news that their National Forensics League chapter earned the Leading Chapter Award in the Sagebrush District.

“This coveted award, based upon student participation, is the highest honor the League can bestow upon a chapter,” wrote NFL Executive Director Scott Wunn. “This year, out of more than 3,000 NFL member schools nationwide, your school is one of only 108 to receive the Leading Chapter Award.”

During the Sagebrush District Tournament at Spanish Springs High School on April 18-20, the combined Pau-Wa-Lu/Carson Valley Middle School team of Ali Cronin and Johnny Jacoboni took second place in duo interpretation and qualified to attend the NFL National Speech and Debate Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., in June.

“Douglas schools have not qualified a freshman student to the national tournament since 2000, so it has been 13 years,” said PWL debate coach Callie Parr.
