Valley residents sail to Germany

Dick Behrman, Wm. Helberg, Herman Neddenriep, Henry Krantz, Henry Volmer, Dick Wennhold and Dick Winkelman, all residents of this valley for the past several years will sail next week for their homes in Germany for a few months visit. They expect to return early in the spring.

George Springmeyer, one of the best know attorneys in Reno and for several years active in Republican and Progressive politics in this state, being twice a candidate for attorney-general, is making arrangements to conclude his law practice in Reno preparatory to enlisting in the army, says the Gazette.

November 22, 1962
Douglas County Volunteer firemen worked for five hours Monday night controlling a fire of undetermined origin that razed a large barn on the Know Johnson ranch on Mottsville Lane some four miles west of Gardnerville. Also destroyed were some 35 tons of grass hay, and a collection of 10 buggies. Cause of the fire could not be determined. Johnson said it would cost approximately $30,000 to rebuild the barn.

The Douglas County Jail, also know as the Gardnerville Branch Jail was the only facility in the county from 1910 to 1916, according to Jim Park, Gardnerville town manager. The old jail sits in the same condition it was nearly 100 years ago behind the French and Adaven hotels off Highway 395 in Gardnerville. And for that reason, Park said the town of Gardnerville is seeking historic status of the old jail with The National Register of Historic Places.
