Turn lane a good answer
July 23, 2013
Adding a center turn lane to Highway 395 at the Washoe Tribal Offices and the Smoke Shop has been a long time goal for the Tribe.
With no turn lane and a speed limit of 55 mph, the prospect of making a left turn into either place is a scary one.
The turn lane was one of the projects listed on the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Southern Corridor Traffic Study in 2005.
The Tribe has also asked the state to reduce the speed limit on that section of highway down to 45 mph or even 35 mph.
There is a turn lane further south, to the entrance of the Corley Ranch, but to date there’s been no apparent movement in extending that turn lane north.
Thursday’s wasn’t the first head-on fatal accident to occur at that location, and we expect even with the improvement to the road it won’t be the last.
Because in the end, no matter what the highway configuration does, it’s we drivers who are responsible for our actions behind the wheel.
While a reduction in the speed limit might prompt a debate, we doubt many folks would mind a turn lane in that spot if it helped reduce the danger.
We understand the state is meeting with the tribe to find a way to have the turn lane installed. We consider that a step in the right direction.
But with an estimated cost of $2.5 million, it may be a while before the lane is installed.
