Teen dance is Friday at the fairgrounds

by Caryn Hallerchaller@recordcourier.com

Since 1986 Douglas County Parks & Recreation has sponsored teen dances for students in sixth through eighth grade. The next dance is 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building.“We have a wonderful community, but there are not a lot of things for teenagers to do, so the teen dance is something they can enjoy outside of school,” recreation specialist Amanda Reid said. “It gives them someplace to be and have a good time in a safe atmosphere.”Cost is $10, and includes a slice of pizza and a drink. Snacks will be available for purchase. The dance will include D.J. music with Bill McClain’s Mobile Music. Students must bring student identification or a copy of their most recent report card to verify grade.Close to 150 students attend the dances that are held three to four times during the school year. Douglas County Parks & Recreation staff members serve as chaperones.“Once the kids are in the building they are not allowed back outside until somebody comes to pick them up,” Reid said. “If they want to leave early they can call someone to pick them up, and a staff member will wait with them.”Reid said the “no freaking” dance policy is also strictly enforced.“The staff has been briefed on what is acceptable. If kids get talked to twice they are asked to call a parent and go home,” Reid said. “We basically matched the policy at the middle schools. We’ve been doing this for two years now, and the kids expect it, and are really good about following the rules.”Students must arrange their own transportation ahead of time and need to be picked up promptly at 9 p.m. Parents are asked to not drop off any student prior to the doors opening at 6:30 p.m.For more information, call the recreation department at 782-9828.
