Scarselli Elementary students receive the gift of reading

by Amy Roby

‘Tis the season for sharing – gifts, self, and spirit. Douglas County is the most generous community I have ever known. Especially at this time of year, everywhere you look, there are expressions of love and giving that warm the soul.

One such example is the legacy of Eva Scarselli. Until her death in June 2011, this former school teacher and wife of Douglas County School Superintendent Gene Scarselli gave an annual financial gift to Scarselli Elementary School on behalf of her late husband. Funds were to be used as the school saw fit, and teachers and administrators chose to avail the money to give the gift of reading. They decided to purchase a book for every single student attending the school so that each child would have their very own book to read at home.

Each December for the last several years, books have been made available for the children to peruse and select the one suiting their fancy. Scarselli Elementary Reading Specialist Cindy DeBlose shares that this particular event is one of the favorite highlights of the whole school year.

Following Ms. Scarselli’s passing, her children chose to carry on her tradition and generously gave memorial donation monies to the school. Ms. DeBlose reports that hundreds of books have been purchased again this year, and were distributed this past week.

Thank you to the Scarselli family for this legacy and for encouraging and inspiring a love of reading in our children. What a beautiful gift.

Wishing everyone a bountiful, blessed holiday and a joyous and peaceful new year.
