Remembering Carson Valley’s Gary Bowers
July 5, 2013
I was sorry to hear about the recent death of Gary Bowers. A longtime minister serving in Gardnerville and Genoa, he would come into the Genoa Country Store and talk to my wife, Jenn Hollister, when she was working the counter. She told me when we got ready to wed, that Gary made her promise that when she was ready, she would give him a call.
That call came July 15, 1990. It was a Sunday. We got our marriage license and called Gary’s house to track him down. It turns out he was performing a wedding at the Carson Valley Inn. We met him at Mormon Station State Historic Park after 5:30 p.m. We were joined by Jenn’s friends Lisa and J.B. Lekumberry, who were celebrating their birthday at Shirley Giovachinni’s house along with Julie Louch, fellow R-C writer Lee Ann Fleming and her then boyfriend.
The bride wore blue shorts and a blue-and-white-striped T-shirt. We used rings Jenn had scared up out of her jewelry box.

Dr. Robert Yim, a member of the Douglas County High School Class of 1943 was in town last week on his way to Napa Calif., to visit his son. He visited with members of his high school class.
His book, “Sleeping With Mae West,” was written up by the local paper, the Towson Times.

On Saturday, I attended the wedding of cousin Abby Aldrich to John Park along the McKenzie River in Oregon. The couple’s honeymoon cruise was in a rowboat. Abby is a Douglas High graduate and the daughter of photographer Jay Aldrich and landscaper Tina Fixman.
