June 24, 1892

The Board of Teachers Examiners met in Genoa last week composed of Miss Ellen Virgin, Miss Frances Wasson and Miss Annie Olcovich. One application only came before the board, that of Mrs. G. N. Folsom, who teaches at Hobart, Lake Tahoe.

95 years ago

June 22, 1917

The farm labor situation is not as bad as it was at first supposed, and it is expected that the farmers in the state will have little difficulty in securing men to harvest their crops this year, according to the members of the state food conservation board which met in Reno this week. Holbrook Working, a federal representative of the United States department of agriculture, is making a thorough canvas of the state. He was a visitor to this Valley and met with some of the farmers to ascertain their requirements and acquaint himself with the local labor situation.

Douglas County school trustees are planning to buy a new school bus. Notice was served this week by Herb Witt, clerk of the board of trustees for the Douglas County School District, that bids would be opened at 7:30 p.m., July 10, for a 60-passenger bus for use by the local schools.

Wet your whistles and get ready to “Pucker-up.” The Carson City Chamber of Commerce announces the World’s 10th International Whistle-Off will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22 & 23, 1987 at Mills Park, Carson City. The Whistle-Off, held in Carson City every year since its 1977 inception, is a melodic whistling competition.

Last weekend, James Tenbroek, 8, traveled to Santa Rosa, Calif., to compete in the Norcal Sectional Qualifier for the Western U.S. Championship tournament to be held in San Diego, Calif. In the first two rounds of the Boys-8 division, he cruised to easy victories, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1.
