Parade route not our call
November 29, 2012
This is in response to the latest letter to the editor dated Nov. 28 from Kathi Hussman regarding the Parade of Lights.
While we appreciate her letter, and an earlier letter and article that were in a recent edition of The Record-Courier, some items warrant clarification. Main Street Gardnerville does not have the authority to make a decision related to the parade route. The purpose of Main Street Gardnerville is to promote and support events within the community through our volunteer network.
Mrs. Hussman stated in her letter: “The Main Street Gardnerville committee that is supposed to promote downtown Gardnerville and make it a walking community should be ashamed for effectively leaving out most of the actual downtown corridor.”
Technically, the Main Street District extends from the town’s maintenance yard facility, just north of Raley’s, to the Minden-Gardnerville town line.
We are a nonprofit corporation that focuses on the revitalization of this small section of town; yet, we continue to work with the community at-large to improve our district.
The information we received stated that this route change would bring more people to the heart of the downtown district; providing residents with better access along Douglas Avenue to both Minden and Gardnerville before, during and after the parade.
Main Street Gardnerville is a community based self-help program involving various members of the community in order to revitalize the downtown. Our program has been successful in so many ways thanks to our large group of volunteers and our partnerships with the Town of Gardnerville, Douglas County, downtown businesses, residents and other area organizations. I invite anyone who would like to find out more about our program to contact us at 782-8027 or info@MainStreetGardnerville.org.
