Locavore Dinner a great event


The Earth Day Locavore Dinner hosted by the Sustainable Living & Renewable Energy Roundup (SLRER, http://www.greenlivingfest.org) at David Walley's Hot Springs was a huge success. The room was packed, there was good food, awards and prizes given – even the weather cooperated, which returning dinner guests know has not always been the case. There aren't a whole lot of food crops maturing this early in the year in Northern Nevada, but we have a growing number of small farms using hoop houses and green houses to extend their growing season. Their offerings, coupled with locally produced preserved foods, allowed Executive Chef Brandon Kealoha and Sous Chef Zack Strazi to put together a delicious selection of dishes.

We enjoyed donated Bently Ranch beef, Hungry Mother Organics tilapia and tomatoes, Custom Gardens Organic Farm (Silver Springs) sunchokes, herbs, honey and ginger, Holley Farms (Dayton) garlic and honey, Villa Basque Deli (Carson City) Pete's famous Basque chorizo, Jacob's Berry Farm (Gardnerville) berries, Paul Schat's Bakery (Carson City) rolls and fruit tartlets. SLRER board member, Barry Levan of Doe's Cheesecakes, made his mother's wonderful lemon cheesecake for dessert. The wine came from Churchill Vineyards (Fallon), the beer from Great Basin Brewery (Reno), and coffee from Starbucks (Minden). Plant It Nursery loaned us the flowering centerpieces, many of which were sold on the spot, and Comstock Seed donated wild flower seed packets as table favors. Lucky door prize winners won jars of honey and a "Dip and Dine" package donated by Walley's.

While we recovered from this feast, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bill Chernock introduced the new GreenBIG program for local businesses and gave out the first five awards. To earn the designation, businesses filled in a checklist to measure their level of "green" or environmental friendliness and were awarded a level of bronze, silver, or gold.

A gold award was given to Bently Ranch, silver awards went to Comstock Seed and Cassenelli Landscaping & Construction and bronze awards were given to Ukenevada and Princess House Independent Consultant Gwyneth Pryzbylo.

The Green Business Improvement Group is a cooperative group of community leaders, environmental experts, and business leaders from Carson City, Douglas County, and Lyon County. The group's mission is to recognize businesses for green business practices; to educate business owners on best environmental business practices; and to encourage citizens in the community to support green businesses and to understand why environmental sustainability is important.
