Lecturer discusses 1980 bombing

The Douglas County Historical Society’s lecture for Sept. 13 features Bill Jonkey telling the story about the bombing of Harvey’s 32 years ago.

Jonkey retired in December 2000 from a career in law enforcement that spanned more than 35 years, which includes service as a police officer in Long Beach, Calif., and more than 30 years with the FBI. In addition to being an investigator, he was a certified FBI firearms, SWAT, and defensive tactics instructor.

For more than 20 years Jonkey was an FBI special agent bomb technician, serving as a bomb technician and crime scene investigator at major bombings in the United States, including the bombing of Harvey’s Hotel Casino at Stateline in 1980.

He and his wife Sandy live on their ranch in Gardnerville, and enjoy all the related ranching activities.

Lecture begins at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 in Gardnerville. Admission is $3 and free to members. For more information, call 782-2555.
