Inaugural art event well-attended
October 23, 2012
Event organizer Carson Costa touted the Oct. 13 Arts and Ag in the Park a well-attended success.
The inaugural event took place at Minden Park to get the community more involved in Douglas High School’s arts programs.
“I thought it was awesome. I’d like to see it expand,” said Brent Newlon, a social studies teacher at Douglas High School who came out to support the event.
Although the culinary program was not able to attend as originally planned, there was Chia Pet making and a petting zoo including a miniature pony, two goats, a duck, three rabbits, and a chicken put on by the agriculture program.
Art was displayed by the ceramics, photography, screenprinting, drawing and painting programs.
There were performances throughout the day by the drama department, and a performance by the madrigals in the morning.

“I loved it how Carson was able to put this together for the rest of the community to see and experience Douglas high students’ talents,” said Kelsey Endter, who participated as a member of the drama program as well as a member of the madrigals.
Throughout the day, people had the opportunity to talk to students and the instructors about the different programs and make donations. At any given time, there were around 40 or 50 people milling about the booths set up in the park.
“I think the response was so extremely positive and the people that attended were so impressed. We should be doing more of it,” said KC Brennan, the advisor for the photography and drawing and painting programs.
There are plans to continue this event in the future, and Costa hopes to incorporate more of the programs each year. Eventually, she would like to bring this event to other communities, as well.
Her main target is the band.
“I was really hoping to get the band out here,” said Costa. “They are such a big part of the school’s programs and were really targeted for cuts last year. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.”
Even so, the first annual Arts and Ag in the Park is being considered a success.
