High school students act from the hip

by Carson Costa

Colton Witt/Special to The R-CKyle Ruscigno and Taylor Gray perform a scene at last year's Improv Show.

Amy Sando, director of Douglas High School’s drama department, said that for Douglas High School students the best part of the annual Improv Show is the actors.

“You get to see your peers make fools of themselves,” she said.

Douglas High School’s Drama Club will present their fourth annual Improv Show this weekend.

The show is at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Douglas High School. Tickets are $5 and concessions will be for sale.

“Improv” is short for improvisation, which is a comedic acting technique where the actor does not know the scenario, character, or lines, and must come up with a scene based on audience suggestions on the spot.

“They as players don’t know what’s going to happen. It teaches all sorts of skills that are especially valuable in comedy,” said Sando.

The show includes Cayli McGuire, Austin Sunderland, Keaton Peters, Alina Harwood, Zayla Zedlar, Nicole Bennett, Michael Demaree, Kyle Ruscigno, Makayla Mattison, David Sando, Grant Spurgeon, and Kat Boatwright, all of whom are members of the DHS Improv Team.

There are three rules of improv the actors must follow: Never say “no,” make your partner look good, and say the first thing that comes to your mind.

The show will be much like “Saturday Night Live,” and will consist of a variety of improv games which provide different situations for the audience to fill with their ideas, and the actors must then play the game using the audience suggestions.

One of the team’s favorite games is called Party Guests.

In this game, one actor is the party host and a number of other actors are the party guests. The host goes backstage while the audience selects a personality trait, celebrity persona, or career for each of the other actors.

The host returns on-stage and must guess who each of his or her guests are.
