Dance classes at Genoa Town Hall

R-C file photoLarry Ward calls a square dancing event at the CVIC Hall in Minden in February 2009.

Dance instructor Larry Ward is offering dance classes Mondays and Tuesdays at the Genoa Town Hall.

Ward, 77, has been square dancing for 60 years.

“As a little kid I watched it and thought it was great,” he said. “I got started calling when I was 13.”

The 16-week country couple and line dancing classes cost $7 per person.

Students will learn waltz across Texas, cowboy cha, Texas two-step and line dances.

Classes are 7 to 8:30 p.m. every week beginning Monday at the Genoa Town Hall.

The 20-week beginner square dance classes cost $6 for adults and $4 for teens.

According to Ward, an evening of square dancing offers great aerobic and mental exercise, develops social skills by interacting with eight people in a square, and relieves tension and stress.

“Young people are so into computers, so it’s the older generations holding it together,” Ward said. “Socially, we’d like to see college-age people come out and join something that’s social and all-American. We’re just trying to keep it alive.”

Classes are 6 to 7:30 p.m. every week beginning Tuesday in the Genoa Town Hall.
