Craft fair benefits senior center
November 6, 2012
As the fundraising arm of the Douglas County Senior Center, Young at Heart has committed to supply all of the kitchen furnishings for the new facility, slated for completion in 2015.
“The dining room in the new center will seat 300 people, so I can see a big increase coming,” board member Esther Hildebrand said, “Young At Heart will be furnishing the kitchen with everything, so we have to really buckle down and do some fundraising.”
One of the organization’s largest fundraisers is their annual holiday craft fair 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 17 at 2300 Meadow Lane in Gardnerville.
“We have more than 20 vendors. There’s a big variety of stuff,” Hildebrand said. “It’s a good way to Christmas shop. With the economy everybody needs to save where they can.”
Young at Heart’s gift shop inside the senior center will be open that day as well.
“We have 50 to 60 vendors that put items in the gift shop,” Hildebrand said, “and we take 15 percent of the sales.”

Along with food for sale, there will be raffles throughout the day.
Prizes include one-night stay with a dinner and show package at Harrah’s, breakfast or lunch for two at Sorensen’s, one-night stay at Atlantis in Reno and gift certificates from Minden Food Company, Jethro’s, Adele’s and Silver Strike Lanes.
“The community has been really good with response to the raffle prizes,” Hildebrand said. “They really support us.”
Tickets will be sold starting Nov. 12 at the senior center, and players do not need to be present to win.
“It’s a really fun, festive event,” Hildebrand said. “The funds really mean a lot for the community because it all goes toward supporting the senior center.”
Hildebrand said the cost to furnish the new kitchen are estimated at $100,000.
“It’s (the senior center) of value in a lot of different ways. We have a sight impaired support group that meets once a month. We have the adopt-an-elder program. There’s a homemaker program that helps seniors stay at home rather than a care facility,” Hildebrand said. “The center also provides other services like trips for seniors to dinner or shopping to Meadowood Mall. It’s really unending all the services it provides.”
