Crab feed to ease cost of senior soup program

Due to the recession, Douglas County has had to cut funding to the senior soup program, which costs $15,000 a year to fund.
Doug and Cindy Petersen, who have funded the program for the past several years, are hoping to raise part of the money at the fourth annual Sertoma Crab and Tri Tip Feed at 5 p.m. Feb. 9 in the CVIC Hall.
“They had to cut the soup,” said Cindy, co-chair for the Sertoma event. “My mom was a volunteer at the senior center and I was an employee at the time. I was heartbroken.”
The soup program is run Monday through Friday by Young at Heart Senior Citizen’s Club, and funded by the Petersen’s through their family and personal foundations.
On a daily basis, 100 seniors eat lunch at the senior center.
There will be Dungeness crab, tri tip, baked potatoes, salad, warm garlic bread, soup, and cake served at the all-you-can-eat feed, with choices of hot or cold butter, sour cream, and chives.

Water, tea, and coffee will be available to drink.
The Petersen’s order 250 pounds of Dungeness crab and 36, 3-pound tri tip steaks for this event.
The crab is ordered fresh from Oregon by Scolari’s, and is picked up the day of the event in order to ensure it is as fresh as possible.
“We want to thank Young at Heart for providing the soup last year and offering to provide it again this year,” said Petersen.
The food is cooked by volunteers from Carson Valley Sertoma, along with a couple of volunteers from Young at Heart.
The crab and tri tip feed generally earns $5000-6,000 toward the soup program, but the Petersen’s are still looking into more ways to fund the program.
“Right now we’re really limited to space. We have talked about doing two seatings,” said Petersen.
