Celebrating ‘A Wonderful Life’

Special to The R-CThe cast of 'It's a Wonderful Life.' Braeden Garrett, Victoria Martin, Brynn Garrett, Robert Miller, Rich Garrett, Sabrina Martin, Marcus Cotton, Shane Martin. The radio play opens Dec. 22 at Carson Valley Inn.

Theater of Arts Discipline presents a live radio play version of “It’s A Wonderful Life.”

The show will take place in the Carson Valley Inn Ballroom 7 p.m., Dec. 22 and 2 and 7 p.m., Dec. 23.

“It’s definitely our favorite holiday movie. This is a great story for this time of year. It’s a good message,” said director Rich Garrett. “We’ve been looking for a good script of the show for years, and this script does not divert from it at all. It is the movie.”

This American Christmas classic is about an angel who helps a compassionate, but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he never existed.

Garrett said performing a live radio play version of the movie, with actors playing multiple roles, posed some exciting challenges.

“The fact that it’s a radio play presents a challenge because there’s going to be certain expectations coming in to stay as close to the movie as possible,” he said. “The actors have to change voices, and remember which microphone to go to, and literally switch voices in between lines.”

During intermission, the cast will be caroling some holiday tunes of the 1940s, which include Bing Crosby’s version of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and “I’ll be Home For Christmas.”

“For those people not traveling out of town this gets you in the holiday spirit,” Garrett said. “It’s a message of hope, community and love. People can never get enough of that. It’s a beautiful story young and old can enjoy.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for students and seniors.
